Meals-Ready-To-Eat Hurricane Relief sold on eBay?

U.S. Investigates Sale of MREs on eBay The government is looking into whether eBay sellers in Gulf Coast states are trying to profit from military foodstuffs handed out for free (Meals-Ready-to-Eat) following hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. Some of the MREs advertised on the eBay are being sold from Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and other Gulf states, and are individually packaged with a disclaimer that clearly notes: "U.S. Government property — Commercial resale is unlawful.

The Ebay Buyer's FAQ

A guest article by Kirsten Hawkins

So you have a question? Has something gone very wrong and you don't know what to do? Well, fair enough. Here are the questions that I hear all the time from buyers.
Does eBay have a Customer Service Department I Can Phone?
eBay are notoriously hard to contact, should you ever need to - it sometimes seems like they expect the site to run itself. You can email them, as long as you don't have your heart set on a coherent response: go to http://pages.ebay.com/help/contact_us/_base/index.html. You might have better luck in a 'live help' webchat here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/n-livehelp.html.
Only eBay Power Sellers (sellers with a very high feedback rating) get to phone customer service. If you really want to try your luck, type 'ebay [your country] phone number' into a search engine and you'll probably find something. Unfortunately, the chances are you'll have gone to all that trouble for the privilege of leaving an answerphone message.
It might seem cruel, but imagine the number of people who would call eBay every day with the silliest questions if they gave out their phone number everywhere. Its Wild West nature is, in a way, part of its charm.
eBay Sent Me an Email Saying They're Going to Close My Account. What Should I Do?
This email asks for your password, right? It's a scam, an attempt to frighten you, make you give up your details and then steal your account. eBay will never ask for your password or any other account details by email. eBay say that you should only ever enter your password on pages that whose addresses start with http://signin.ebay.com/. They even offer a special 'Account Guard' as part of their toolbar, which lets you check that you're not giving your password to a dodgy fake site. You can read more here: http://pages.ebay.com/toolbar/accountguard_1.html.
It Seems Too Good to be True. How Does eBay Make Money?
For you, the buyer, eBay is free. Sellers, though, pay all sorts of fees: a listing fee for each item they list, a final value fee (a percentage of what the item sold for). They can they pay optional fees for extra services, including Buy it Now, extra pictures, reserve prices, highlighting the auction, putting it in bold, listing it first in search results or even putting it on the front page. You can see a full list of fees at http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html.
It's obviously worth it to the sellers, though, or they wouldn't carry on using eBay. The system is quite efficient, and basically forces both eBay and the sellers to keep their profit margins as low as possible - otherwise prices will simply go too high and the buyers will stop buying.
How Safe is eBay?
Well, as it happens, that's the subject of our next email! All of eBay's safety services for buyers and sellers are in one place, called 'SafeHarbor'. SafeHarbor handles fraud prevention and investigation, helps with dispute resolution and keeps rule-breakers in check. Read all about it next time, and be safe.

eBay removes kidney for sale auction

eBay Australia has cancelled the sale of a human kidney after it attracted bids up to $US800,000 ($1.05 million) in just a single day.
The kidney was being sold by a 54-year-old US citizen from Missoula in Montana who wanted to use the proceeds to support his family.
The internet site does not permit the sale of human organs and the auction was deleted as soon as it came to the notice of eBay management, the company said.
Another eBay seller tried to sell a kidney in 1999. That sale brought in bids of more than $US5.7 million before the company intervened to block the auction.

Man admits guilt in eBay auction scam

As reported:

A San Leandro man has pleaded guilty to charges that he defrauded eBay users in online auctions for rare Mickey Mantle and Michael Jordan sports cards.
In pleading guilty Monday to one count of mail fraud, Michael Gouveia, 40, admitted that he accepted money from the winning bidders in 2002 and 2003 with no intention of delivering the cards as promised.
Gouveia admitted that he had defrauded eBay users of more than $34,000, including a Michigan resident who sent him $7,199 for a 1951 Mickey Mantle baseball card that was never delivered. U.S. District Judge James Ware will sentence Gouveia in San Jose on Dec. 19.

Geldof angry; eBay scraps Live8 ticket sales

LONDON (AFP) - The Internet auction site eBay bowed to pressure and stopped selling tickets for the London Live8 concert to increase awareness of African poverty due to be held on July 2.

More than two million mobile phone text messages were sent in a lottery to win the 150,000 free tickets to the show, starring Paul McCartney, Elton John and REM, among others.

But no sooner had the first tickets been allocated than some began appearing Tuesday for sale on eBay.

Irish pop star-turned aid activist Bob Geldof, who is organising the event, described the sales as "sick" and threatened to launch a court case to force eBay to end them.

Geldof told Tuesday's Daily Mirror newspaper that he was furious at eBay for allowing the sales, labelling the firm "an electronic pimp".

eBay to Buy Shopping.com for $620 million

San Francisco (InfoWorld) - eBay continued its acquisition spree by agreeing to buy comparison shopping site Shopping.com for about $620 million in cash. The move should benefit eBay's sellers by giving them access to a new sales channel and a new set of buyers, while Shopping.com will be improved by the addition of eBay's listings on its site. eBay had annual revenue of $3.3 billion in 2004, and net income of $778.2 million. In the same year Shopping.com made $99 million in revenue and net income of $12.2 million. But Shopping.com has been adding customers at a faster clip, according to research company comScore Media Metrix. It attracted 22.6 million unique visitors in April, up 15 percent from the same month a year earlier, compared with 63.8 million for eBay, an increase of 6 percent over the same period. In December eBay agreed to buy property listings site Rent.com for $415 million, and a month before that it bought Holland's top classifieds site, Marktplaats.nl, for $290 million. Earlier last year it acquired a 25-percent stake in Craigslist of San Francisco, beefing up its classifieds business.

eBay Selling Tip # 1: Relisting Your Item

Normally, Insertion Fees are non-refundable. However, if your listing ends without a winning buyer or results in an Unpaid Item (UPI), you may qualify for a credit by relisting the item. If the item sells the second time, eBay will refund the Insertion Fee for the relisting.

To relist an item, sign in to eBay, go to the item page for the ended listing, and click on "relist your item". You can also go to other places, such as the Unsold Items view of My eBay, and click on the "Relist" link for the item. (Source: eBay Help)

Stolen PaceMaker sold on eBay

This surely should push eBay to be more strict with medical devices.

It was reported by Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune that Medtronic Inc., based in Minneapolis, recently discovered that one of its pacemakers was stolen from a California hospital, sold on eBay and then implanted in an Arizona man.

This surfaced when when police in Sacramento, Calif., arrested a 21-year-old woman early March on an embezzlement charge. Amber Bowen, a nurse's aide at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, also ran an Internet medical supply business on the side called Body Fantasy Inc., according to Sacramento police.

Bowen allegedly stole two Medtronic pacemakers from the hospital in October 2004 and then posted them for sale on eBay. Typically, a pacemaker costs about $6,000, but Bowen sold them for $255 each, police said.

The report said the stolen pacemakers were bought by Greg Etts, a purchasing manager for a large cardiac practice based in the Phoenix area called Advanced Cardiac Specialists, according to a report issued by the Arizona Medical Board. Etts reportedly had admitted to board officials that he knew the pacemakers were stolen when he bought them and that he often purchased devices on eBay.

Popemobile Seller Sues eBay: Price not enough

Benjamin Halbe, the jobless German who sold the the VW Golf once owned by Pope Benedict XVI (now known as the PopeMobile) for £130,000 GoldenPalace.com is suing eBay because he says it's not enough.

Halbe, 21, from Olpe near Cologne, bought the car from a private dealer for over £6,000 just six months before Pope Benedict took the helm in Vatican.

Halbe asked lawyers in the Munich legal firm Ulsenheimer and Friedrich to investigate claims that dozens of people had been unable to log on to eBay to register a bid in the closing stages of the sale.

They would be investigating the last few hours where there were "proven bidders who wanted to offer more but whose bids for higher amounts for unknown reasons were not registered on the eBay site".

Lawyer Juergen Langer from the firm has called on eBay to explain the problems. eBay in Germany admitted the car had been the most popular item ever to have been sold on its pages.

North Dakota boy auctioned by friend on eBay; bid reached $3,000

In North Dakota, a prank by two teenagers caught the attention of the principal at North Dakota's Hazen High.

Of of them put the other on sale on eBay, but eBay removed the auction when the bidding reached $3,300. Since sale of body parts on eBay is illegal, and so therefore is the sale of a whole live body.

The boys lost their computer privileges at school (yes, they used the school computers) but Dana Mattheis, the mother of the boy being "sold" on e-Bay, said she thinks the prank was funny. Mattheis said there was nothing inappropriate in the eBay ad.But that's not how Principal Ed Boger saw it.

Golden Palace buys Pope mobile Volkswagen

The online casino GoldenPalace.com known for buying unusual items at outrageous prices has won an eBay auction for Pope Benedict XVI's previously owned 1999 Volkswagen Golf, bidding Euro 188,938.88 (approx. $244,590.83 USD).

Pope Benedict XVI (then Cardinal Josef Ratzinger) sold the six-year-old VW Golf to a private individual a few months he become pope. The new owner subsequently posted the car on eBay, and the auction reportedly shattered eBay records by receiving over 8.5 million visitors to its auction page.

GoldenPalace CEO Richard Row: "We have amassed a collection of what many consider to be holy artifacts. It seems only natural to get a blessed vehicle to carry these items. We are planning to showcase our acquisitions by bringing them on tour and allowing people to enjoy the experience of sitting in the divine car, in an effort to raise as much money for charity as possible."

Just recently Golden Palace shelled out $5,001 to buy Britney Spears' alleged home pregnancy test. But not on eBay. It was being peddled by Ottawa radio station Hot 89.9, which claims the test was retrieved from the trash inside Spears' Los Angeles hotel room months ago.

3 eBay execs to pay $3million lawsuit settlement

Mercury News reports that "three current and former eBay executives, including Chief Executive Meg Whitman, have agreed to pay $3 million to settle a lawsuit that they inappropriately accepted shares in scores of lucrative IPOs from investment-banking firm Goldman Sachs Group."

Whitman, along with eBay founder and Chairman Pierre Omidyar and former President Jeffrey Skoll, will pay the money into a fund controlled by the company. Goldman Sachs will also make a payment of $395,000, part of the settlement with eBay shareholders

The case concerns "spinning," the now-banned practice by which investment banking firms would dole out to favorite clients the lucrative opportunity to purchase shares in initial public offerings they were underwriting. The complaint alleges that Goldman allotted such opportunities to senior eBay executives in order to secure their position as eBay's investment banker, and that these executives should have offered that opportunity to eBay itself.

Pope Benedict Volkswagen sold on eBay Germany

Reuters reports that "a second hand car once said to be registered in the name of Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger -- the new Pope Benedict - is up for sale on eBay and the sky seems to be the limit when it comes to bidding."

The vehicle, a metallic gray 1999 Volkswagen Golf, went up for auction on the German site (www.ebay.de) at a minimum price of 9,900 euros ($12,790) on Wednesday and, just over 24 hours and more than 300 bids later, the price had hit one million euros ($1.3 million).

German Web Site n-tv.de identified the seller as Benjamin Halbe, 21, from the town of Olpe in Germany's Sauerland region, who said he bought the car from a local dealer in January.

"It drives like heaven," the site quoted Halbe as saying.

According to DW-World, "the former Cardinal Ratzinger's private secretary had long been a customer of the dealership and, although it is well known in church circles that the pope does not have a drivers license, it is believed the Golf was used to ferry the Holy Father-to-be around before at some point in 1999."

eBay.de describes the vehicle as a two liter petrol-powered manual, with 75,000 km (47,000 miles) on the clock since it was first registered in March 1999.

Pope's Communion Wafer auctioned on eBay

SIOUX CITY, Iowa A Communion wafer allegedly blessed by Pope John Paul that was sold on eBay didn't violate the online auction site's policies, according to an eBay spokeswoman.

The wafer, reportedly blessed by the late pope during a Mass in 1998, was offered on Saturday by a seller in Iowa town. It was sold for two-thousand dollars to a buyer in California. The description said the seller acquired the host by going twice for Communion. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Sioux City objected to sale of the Holy Eucharist. But an eBay spokeswoman said the sale was permissible because it wasn't illegal and didn't promote hatred toward Catholics. Photo of Giant Frosted Flake on eBay

Spotted on Ebay on Jan. 23,2005:
Giant Frosted Flake item on eBay

The auction ad:

"Let me start by saying that this auction is the ORIGINAL giant, monster flake. There's some unoriginal joker trying to sell their flake here on Ebay and it's of lesser statue by far. Anyway, you are bidding a single, intact, genuine, MONSTER-SIZED, Kellogg’s Frosted Flake.

No, I was not impaired when I decided to post this auction. I simply poured a bowl of frosted deliciousness and this beauty fell out of the box. I said “WHOA!” and here it is. Please, all parties bid accordingly and responsibly as all proceeds from this auction will be divided 50/50 and disbursed to a charity fund and my 10-month old son’s college fund."

I have been eating and enjoying Frosted Flakes for years from my early youth into my current adulthood. I have literally eaten hundreds of bowls and I regularly finish off at least a box and a half every month. Why, because THEEEYYY’RE GREAT! I really am thankful for Kellogg’s and their contribution to America. When I cracked open this particular box of Frosted Flakes I knew it was special, as all of the flakes seemed freakishly large.

Anyway, I have NEVER come across a Frosted Flake of the stature pictured here in this auction! It’s a King of flakes to say the least, measuring approximately 3 inches by 2 inches. In the pictures you can see how monstrous the flake is. I pulled several large flakes from my bowl and this one dwarfed them all in comparison. Additionally, that is a tablespoon in the pictures, not some wimpy teaspoon that most folks eat their cereal with. My wife’s hand also demonstrates the king-sized flakedness of the specimen.

This is simply a phenomenon. If there is a larger flake out there I haven’t come across it. I also searched Guinness World Records online and I didn’t find any entry for Frosted Flakes. In closing I would like to say that if you wish to own a unique, if not absurd and eccentric piece of history and help out with two worthy causes, please bid on the auction.

I will accept payment via Paypal, Personal Check, or Money Order. Payment is expected within 7 days of the auction closing. I will pay for safe and secure shipping to ensure that your flake arrives in perfect condition. Thanks for viewing my auction and good luck bidding!

Questions from other buyers for this listing

Q: Can you please explain the dark colored blemish seen on the lower section of the flake in the last photo? Is this another smaller flake that has become stuck to the giant flake or do you think that the giant flake could possibly be growing some kind of appendage? Answered on Jan-11-05

A: I carefully inspected the flake and it appears to be a smaller flake that has become stuck to the larger flake via sugar cohesion. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being an appendage. This thing might possibly have a life of it's own.

Q: If I buy other cereal type items from you, will you combine shipping. For instance, if I wanted to buy the rest of the normal size flakes from the box, would I have to pay separate shipping for each flake? Thanks for your prompt response! Answered on Jan-11-05
A: Unfortunately I'm only auctioning this particular flake. The remaining flakes will be consumed by me and my son : )

Q: I have been looking for something like this for sometime. My only concern is how will you insure delivery of the King Flake? How much would shipping be to 95050? Thanks, BTW you don't drive a Focus, do you? Answered on Jan-11-05
A: I'm glad I could present this item for your bidding pleasure. Secure delivery is included in the auction price. And no, I do not...

Q: Will you be accepting Earth currency for this item or do you require the money produced on whatever planet you're from? Answered on Jan-10-05

A: I am a human. Earth currency in U.S. dollars is the preferable form of payment. However, if you happen to have some extraterrestrial technology you would like to barter, perhaps an agreement can be reached.

Q: Texas is a very big state, you're telling me you couldn't find anything else to do? Answered on Jan-10-05

A: That's why the flake is a monster, everything's bigger in Texas : )

Q: I have a Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch piece, the size of a golf ball, what do you think, in your professional opinion, that might go for? Answered on Jan-10-05
A: Hmm, not sure, as I'm not an expert, but that sounds impressive. I'd figure that the peanut butter quality would fetch it a premium. Get it appraised.

Q: Can you please take a picture of the underside of the giant flake. I want to make sure that no glue, tape or bubble gum has been used to hold multiple Frosted Flakes together. Answered on Jan-10-05
A: In order to represent the true article as best I could, multiple shots were taken from different angles. I assure you this is a single flake. The flake is a one-off genuine article. No enhancements were made to alter it's appearance. What you see is what you get.

Q: So....how bored are you?? Answered on Jan-10-05
A: LOL! If I was, I'm not anymore ;-)

Q: If I bid on this item, will have your wife model with the giant flake? Answered on Jan-10-05
A: She's flattered, but I'd have to go with a NO on that. Thanks anyway.

Q: I have a question... does it come with a nifty little box of milk for dipping? Answered on Jan-10-05
A: Sorry, milk isn't included in the auction. However, you will be provided with a lovely display box in order to show off your monster flake.

Q: Will the item not break if posted, will it be secure ? Answered on Jan-10-05

A: Glad you asked this question. Although the flake is very sturdy due to it's size I will secure it's packaging by the following means; 1) It will be wrapped in multiple layers of tissue paper. 2) The tissue paper packaging will then be surrounded by double thick bubble wrap. 3) The entire package will be packed with styrofoam peanuts in the event that it is jarred during transit.

Q: If I bid, will you throw in your car at no extra charge? Answered on Jan-10-05
A: Hmmm, my car, I'm gonna have to go with no on that one... But, hey, look at it this way, you'll own something much rarer than ANY car ; )

eBay clarifies Fee Increase announcement

Reeling from the backlash of its recent announcement to increase fees, and in a move to soften the negative impact of its impending free increases on Feb. 18, eBay has issued a statement, admitting that its "original communication was a bit unclear. "

Here it is, verbatim:

"Recently, we announced fee changes taking effect on February 18th and affecting certain optional listing upgrades on eBay.com, the subscription fee for a Basic eBay Store, and Final Value Fees on Store Inventory Format listings. Based on Community input, we understand our original communication was a bit unclear.

To clarify, no changes are being made to the Final Value Fees on Auction-style, Auction with Buy It Now option, and Fixed Priced listings (with the exception of certain Business & Industrial capital equipment categories). Final Value Fee changes apply only to Store Inventory Format listings, a listing format only available to Store sellers and with durations of 30, 60, 90, and 120 days and Good 'Til Cancelled.

The Final Value Fees for Auction-style listings, Auction with Buy It Now option, and Fixed Price listings have remained unchanged since 2002."

You can view the full details of the pricing announcement HERE.

Boost Sales with PayPal Buyer Credit

Are you selling higher-priced items on Ebay, AND want to attract more buyers despite the tag price?

This is good news for Ebay Buyers and Ebay Sellers alike, if you're not still aware of it.

I just got reminded by Ebay of PayPal Buyer Credit, dubbed as "an easy way to attract more buyers and boost your sales on your higher-priced eBay listings."

Through February 28, 2005, qualified sellers can save up to 100% on promotional financing fees.

How does it work?

"PayPal Buyer Credit is a personal line of credit exclusively for PayPal members. It lets buyers make low monthly payments on their PayPal purchases, making higher-priced items more affordable. For sellers, PayPal Buyer Credit allows you to attract more buyers to your higher-priced items by promoting your items in the form of low monthly payments, or by allowing you to offer promotional financing (if you currently offer PayPal Buyer Protection on your eBay listings).
